Development History: More Than Just Economic Growth
November 6, 2023Beyond Rote Memorization: Cultivating Historical Thinking in a Digital Age
August 6, 2024E very year, billions of dollars flow from the US to Africa in aid. Governments, foundations, charities—everyone seems to be pitching in to help develop the continent. It's a narrative we're all familiar with: the benevolent West extending a helping hand to those in need.
We need to start by asking this basic question: "What's the impact of US aid to Africa?" Many people in the West, especially those who've participated in short trips to Africa, confidently declare that aid is "saving" Africa.
But is this the whole story?
The truth is far more complex. We need to consider the unintended consequences of aid. A seemingly generous donation of expensive equipment with strings attached can cripple a local economy, or how "free" seeds can disrupt agricultural practices and exacerbate food insecurity.
It's a difficult concept to grasp. After all, how can a free gift be harmful? And that's precisely the challenge.
